1. Choose a song that suits your voice range and ability: Some songs are far more complicated to sing than others.  If you pick a song by Celine Dion or Mariah Carey you are going to require a lot more range to your voice than if you pick something more simple.  Have a play with the type of songs that you feel more comfortable with to build your confidence.  As you improve your voice your choice will increase. 
2. Learn how to breathe correctly:  Many people breathe from their chest rather than using their diaphragm.  Try placing your hands on your stomach and as you breathe in focus and letting the stomach expand.  You may find yourself going a bit dizzy when you first start doing this because so many people habitually shallow breathe.  As you practice this light headedness will go away.  And as a bonus breathing correctly has its health benefits too as you get more oxygen into your body!
3. Its all about the quality of your out breath:  When you sing or talk the sound is made as you breathe out.  If you notice your voice dying at the end of a line you are singing or a note you are holding, its because you are running out of breath.  You can improve your ability to hold a note by practicing letting the air out slowly and steadily.  You also need to be aware of your current ability to so that you can time your in breathes at suitable places within the song and not try and sing for too long between breathes.

5. Act “as if”:  The more confident you are the better you will sound.  One simple way to achieve this is to act as if you are the singer of the song you want to sing.  Before you start to sing imagine either stepping into the body of the singer whose song it is or placing their head on top of yours (metaphorically speaking of course!).  By pretending to be that singer (please note – this doesn’t mean emulating their voice) you will take on at least some of their confidence, posture and beliefs which will all help your singing.
6. Warm up Your Voice:  Singing involves a number of muscles that need to be properly warmed up.  Straining for high notes without warming up your vocal cords runs the risk of injury in the same way as sprinting would when you’ve just stepped straight out of bed.
